There seems to be a lot of mystique surrounding the web, here are some common terms and expressions and a brief definition:-

HTML/XML - programming languages that web pages are written in.
Hosting - the physical location of your site, ie where it will live - usually on a server.
FTP - File Transfer Protocol - the method by which your site is loaded to the server.
SSL - Secure Socket Layers - an accepted security protocol that encrypts sensitive data.
Java - a language of routines that enables a web page to import other HTML to achieve a function.
ASP - Active Server Pages - routines that help to customise a web page to a viewers specific requirements.
POP3 - Post Office Protocol - the method by which your email is delivered to your In-Box.
SMTP - Simple Mail Transfer Protocol - the method by which you send email from your Out-Box.
FrontPage Extensions - a Microsoft utility that enables users of Microsoft Frontpage to quickly update websites without FTP.
